Feet of contemporary choreographers
A PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION BY WILLI DORNER + LISA RASTL Modern dance started in Europe at the beginning of the twentieth century when barefooted dance was discovered. To strip the feet established a new orientation that moved away from classical aesthetics and ballet shoes. In dance, the foot becomes a symbolically charged, essential means of expression. A collaboration between Austrian choreographer Willi Dorner and photographer Lisa Rastl, Feet features the extremities of contemporary choreographers such as Amanda Miller, Steve Paxton, Meg Stuart, and Jérôme Bel, attempting to capture something essential about each artist’s character. Adapted from Helmut Ploebst, text for the exhibition at Österreichisches Theatermuseum Wien, June 2000 |
